operative spaces
2021 senior undergraduate thesis at barnard college

In the same way that identity does not remain fixed throughout time, identity does not remain fixed throughout space. Gender identity, for me, is malleable and fluid, ever changing with spatial and temporal movement.
In this series, I examine the ways in which my own queer and non-binary identity operates across space. My body exists straddled between the rural/suburban and urban spheres, with each space bringing its own unique sense of home and alienation.
Through my photography and careful grouping of images, I aim to put these worlds in conversation with one another. The arrangements oscillate between strict dichotomies and ambiguous spectrums, questioning how space informs identity, as well as how steadfast binaries really are. Ultimately, these arrangements question the multivalency of “home” in my life.
